It was closed in 2016, and in 2017 a North Carolina based company bought the land.
MUSKEGON, Mich — Construction crews started the demolition process of B.C. Cobb last year, and Thursday a wrecking ball went through what was left of the smokestack on Muskegon Lake.
However, the demolition process isn’t over yet.
What once was a 650-foot-tall stack, is being removed in five feet by five feet sections to prepare for what’s expected to become a Great Lakes shipping terminal.
North Carolina based Forsite Development Partners acquired the B.C. Cobb property in 2017 after Consumers Energy closed the coal-fired power plant in 2016.
Forsite hopes to convert the site into a deep-water marine terminal. If successful the 115-acre site with a 1,000-foot dock on Muskegon Lake could offer a cost-effective transportation option to get Michigan crops and products to new national and international markets.
The company is hoping the site will be completely cleared by early 2020.
